Palestine Story 33: An advocate for the visually impaired

10 March 2011 by Joumana Al Jabri. Read More »

“It will be less about what you see, and more about who you are,” says Hala.
Hala is a staunch advocate of early intervention for the visually impaired. Hearing her speak, one imagines pre-conceptions, notions and prejudices groaning, shifting and finally crumbling under her intensity.

There has been an inpour of interest to attend and connect to TEDxRamallah from geographically spread locations. A number of cities have already committed to livestreaming the event: Dubai, Montreal and Reykjavik, among others. We have also set up two main locations that are partnering with the venue in Palestine. Those are Amman and Beirut. Exceptionally, those two cities will include one or two speakers in each that will be livestreamed back into the Bethelehem Convention Center as part of the main program. This is in light of the limitations some speakers will have in accessing Palestine.

There are three ways to be part of TEDxRamallah on 16 April 2011:

TEDxRamallah will take place in three venues in three cities: Bethlehem*, Beirut, and Amman. The latter two locations are to assure that those who wish to attend but cannot access Palestine can be present in partner cities. The three venues will require prior registration through the registration form. CLICK HERE to register to attend in one of the three venues.

Your application will be carefully viewed. Applicants are approved based on a broad set of criteria aimed at ensuring a rich and stimulating exchange of ideas among a diverse group of peers. A limited number of TEDxRamallah registrations are available.

In addition to that we have introduced a nominal fee of 50 NIS (applicable for the Behtlehem venue only) in order to ensure commitment. Students and others interested can apply for a fee waiver through sending an email to hello@tedxramallah.com.

Satellite Events

Satellite Events

Over 6 million Palestinians are scattered around the world as diaspora and refugees, also the larger part of individuals holding Arab passports are not allowed into Ramallah. Satellite events, in this case, becomes paramount to reach out to this large population, a fragment of which would otherwise have attended the event live. It is also our aim to bring this event closer to geographies that only connect to Palestine through the news, and with that, only get a limited and often loaded image of Palestine and Palestinians.

Satellite Events are organized events around the world that host their own TEDxRamallah viewing event. All we do is supply the in-stream and the rest is up to the community. Some satellite locations may choose to complement the event with additional speakers and live performances. Some will be open to the public, while others may choose to limit it to specific groups or organizations.

Following are the technical and other requirements for the livestream:
